The Story behind our Bags’ Names

In a world filled with mass-produced accessories and impersonal trinkets, there’s something truly special about owning a piece that carries with it a rich cultural heritage and a story as unique as its name. At Femi Handbags, we pride ourselves on infusing our products with the essence of tradition and the spirit of innovation. That’s why each of our bags have been lovingly named to truly represent our vibrant Nigerian culture.

One such name that holds a special place in our collection is Segilola. Derived from the Yoruba language, Segilola is more than just a name – it’s a tribute to the strength and beauty of Yoruba women throughout history.

Legend has it that Segilola was a revered princess in ancient Yoruba folklore, known for her unparalleled intelligence, unwavering courage, and compassionate heart. She was a beacon of hope for her people, a symbol of grace and dignity in the face of adversity.

Inspired by Segilola’s legacy and the meaning behind her name, we sought to capture that essence in our design. Handcrafted from the finest leather, Segilola exudes elegance and sophistication. It features a hand loomed fabric (aso- oke), double rolled/long handles, fabric lined interior, with brushed brass or nickel hard-ware finishing. We currently have four style variations of Segilola (mini, midi, bageta and vintage) which are uniquely tailored to cater to various individual style preference.

But beyond its outward beauty, the Segilola bag carries with it a deeper meaning – a reminder of the power of resilience, the importance of inner strength, and the beauty of embracing one’s heritage.

In naming our bags, we pay homage to the rich tapestry of culture and tradition that has shaped our identity. Each name tells a story, weaving together the threads of history, mythology, and everyday life in Nigeria.

Take, for example, the Adesuwa, a name commonly given to princesses in the olden days meaning “Controller of Resources.” In Edo (Benin) language. Just like its namesake, this bag embodies the spirit of abundance and prosperity, empowering its bearer to manifest their dreams and create positive change in the world.  It comes in two style variations (The Adesuwa and The Adesuwa 11). It is generously sized with a top-handle tote to fit all your daily essentials; making it the perfect bag for our queens with very busy lifestyles.

By embracing names for our bags, we hope to not only celebrate the beauty and diversity of Nigerian culture but also to honour the legacy of all women who inspire and in hindsight propel future generations to cherish their heritage”.

So, the next time you carry the Segilola, Adesuwa, or any other Femi Handbag, know that you’re not just accessorizing – you’re carrying a symbol of pride, and a testament to the amazing culture of the Nigerian people. Join us in celebrating our roots and embracing the beauty of diversity with every purchase you make.
